Getting started on arranging your home

Home decoration goes back to centuries and has always been an essential characteristic of human habitats. You might have just moved in a new place or decided to revamp your home, and this question inevitably popped in your mind: how to make your space beautiful and unique? In Singapore, most of us live in apartments and have limited room to get creative with, so it is important to make the best of it. Let’s look at few considerations before taking out your credit card.

Start with what you have!

Here are some questions you might want to write down and answer on paper before taking any actions:

- How many people live in your home?

- Are there any children in your household?

- How much time do you spend at home? Do you work outside or from home?

- How big is your home? Is there a garden?

- What activities take place in your home? Do you get a lot of visitors?

- How much money are you willing to spend on furniture and home décor?

- Do you own this place? If not, are you allowed to drill holes in the wall?

Once all these questions are answered, you have a starting point. It’s important to note that spending thousands of dollars is not necessarily required to beautify your place. From second-hand furniture to affordable handicrafts, a lot of options are available at the click of your mouse!

Begin with the big furniture

The living room is the centre of your home, so it should be arranged in a functional manner. For instance, if you have children, try to spare a small area for them to play on the floor. If you eat in this room, place the dining table close to the kitchen. If you live alone, you want to arrange your living room in a sort of cocoon fashion with some cushions, beans bags etc. Keep in mind that enough space must be kept between the couch, TV console, coffee table etc. to allow easy movement. Moreover, if you have limited space (i.e. a small flat), do not clutter it with too much furniture. Consider hanging your TV to your wall instead of using console, for instance.

Mind the light

It has been proven that light is a key factor to fight depression, so make sure you get plenty of it! Place your couch by your window and opt for white or cream colours to retain as much light as possible. Dark curtains are ideal for bedrooms, while light ones are preferred for living room.

Bright living room

Choose a theme

Consistency and harmony are essential to successfully improve and beautify your home. Whether you have contemporary or classic tastes, you should avoid mixing two opposite styles and keep it simple. For instance, if you are into wood, you could consider a recycled wood dining table that will match wooden vases or wall panels. If you are into antics but do not want to burst your budget, you can consider terracotta handicrafts to match a second-hand vintage console.

Colors? Yes, but with restraint

Unless you want to go for a monochrome type of decoration, do consider brightening up your place with paintings or cute storage accessories such as hand woven bamboo baskets. Baskets are great because they can easily be placed anywhere and used to store anything (we personally use them to store cables!). Getting creative with this kind of home decor is fun and affordable.
